Sex and Pregnancy: Is it safe?

Written by babymaking.co.uk

Having intercourse while the mother-to-be is pregnant is one of the most usual subjects among child bearers and between couples. The parents-to-be may choose not to, but can they keep it up for nine more months? Below are a couple of answers to commonly asked questions and tips on how you and your husband can still enjoy your sex life during pregnancy.

There are no doctors who advise couples to abstain for the whole duration of the woman's pregnancy. As long as you have a normal and healthy pregnancy, there is nothing wrong with it. It can be helpful, however, if you would consult first your health provider so that they could tell if you are at risk for miscarriage and preterm labour. Let the doctor examine you as well and let them know if you are having pregnancy dilemmas like dilated cervix, amniotic fluid is leaking, history of miscarriage (if any) and bleeding. But as long as your doctor says you have a normal pregnancy, making love with your partner while pregnant is never a question. You can do so from the first trimester up to the last day before you will be admitted to the hospital. Some doctors even recommend couples to have sex to induce the woman to go on labour.

Contrary to what others think, intercourse does not hurt nor affect the baby inside you. The cervix is sealed and guarded by a thick mucus plug to prevent infection. Moreover, the unborn child is protected by the uterus' strong muscles and of course by the amniotic sack. After having an orgasm, you may feel that the baby trashes around for a little while. It is not because he was hurt but because of the pounding of your heart after having an intercourse.

Of course it might be hard for both you to have sex as your baby develops. So be creative. There are some positions that are easy manoeuvre to perform and would not compromise the bulging tummy of your wife. Positions such as woman on top, spooning, hands and knees, and side lying allows couple for penetration and manual stimulation of the woman's different body parts that would definitely make your sex life more enticing. If a position does not work, then stop. Find another way to enjoy intercourse during pregnancy. But be careful though, as not to make the pregnant woman lay on her back by the 16th week of gestation or after the 4th month of pregnancy. Oral sex can also be done as long as your husband would not blow air into your vagina. This would result to air embolism, a fatal condition for both mother and baby.

So when is it time to say no? If you have any of the following conditions such as your placenta lying low in your uterus, unexplained vaginal discharge (either blood or fluid), cramps in your abdominal area, and especially if your partner has sexually transmitted diseases, then it is not safe to have sex while pregnant.
