Maternal Health

Millions of women get pregnant each year. Many of these pregnancies are faced with complications such as hemorrhage or bleeding, ectopic pregnancy, infection, hypertension induced by pregnancy, and depression. These complications can easily be treated if recognized immediately.

Healthcare providers are made aware of these potential health risks by a quick inspection of hospital discharge sheets. Sometimes pregnant women do not come back for a follow up check up after being discharged from simple illness thereby increasing the risk of being afflicted with the abovementioned diseases.

Cardiomyopthy is a heart muscle problem, which can lead to heart failure. It is said that a variant of this afflicts pregnant women. The exact cause is unknown. Upon diagnosis, the following findings are seen: during the last month of pregnancy there is an increased risk for cardiac failure, no apparent heart diseases prior to Cardiomyopathy, no recognizable cause of heart failure, and left ventricular abnormality. Clinicians, lab specialists, hospital records and ECG results are required to finally give light to this puzzling illness.

Depression related to pregnancy is not uncommon. According to reports, about 13% of postpartum women battle depression. This is very important to be recognized early on since it will directly affect the newborn and the spouse. There are many kinds of treatment available to women with postpartum depression. The problem is with finally accepting the condition to be able to rid oneself of depression. Most women tend to be shy when it comes to this kind of illness. So the real source of the problem is not solved and nurturing of the newborn is hampered.

A special task force recommends adult screening in clinical setting or facilities that have the capability to accurately diagnose depression. It must be noted that treatment and diagnosis for postpartum depression is different from those, which are not part of the population. There are new suggestions that routine screening be done on pediatric clinics that are often visited both by mothers and neonates. This way, women with postpartum depression need not go to a specialized screening hospital to have them checked because this can be a very embarrassing moment. All women have to do is to wait in line at the pediatric clinic and be checked upon by able doctors.

Women's mental health is as important as her physical health. Sometimes the latter is neglected due to factors, which can actually be avoided. It is good to remember that the best way to keep a woman's sanity is by constant acceptance and nurturing.
