Healthy Diet for a Healthy Pregnancy

Written by babymaking.co.uk

It is common for a pregnant woman to crave for foods, eat a lot and even munch even the oddest concoctions ever. But pregnancy does not give you the privilege to chow everything edible since you have the most excusable reason ever. However, a pregnant woman should be having a healthy diet all throughout her pregnancy not just for her sake but for the sake of the unborn child as well. Vitamins and other nutrition found in nourishing foods are needed to meet the demands of a growing baby and a feeding mommy.

Calcium is very essential to help build strong bones and teeth, for both mother and the baby and milk is the best source for that, may it be fat-free, whole milk or powdered. Nowadays, there are milk products specially made for pregnant women. Calcium supplements are also available and can be bought without prescription. There is no specific type of milk which is recommended for expecting mothers. But, in case the mom-to-be would like to control pregnancy weight while she wants to have the milk's nutritional value at the same time, skim milk is the best option since it has a lower percentage of fat and calories compared to whole milks. Aside from milk, you may also obtain calcium from foods such as cabbage, soy milk, broccoli and breakfast cereals. Since calcium would result into stronger bones, it would prevent you from experiencing back pains during pregnancy, especially in the last three months when your belly is enormous and heavy.

Your baby's brain development still depends on what you eat. Folate is a vital nutrient in your child's progress. Some powdered milk for pregnant woman includes folate as one of its active ingredient. Folate-rich foods should be included in one's daily meal. Examples of these are legumes and all kinds of green leafy vegetables.

During pregnancy, there is a need to maintain ample supply of blood to the mother and the baby and its placenta. If ever a mother does not take foods and supplements rich in iron it would result to iron deficiency anaemia and may cause low-birth weight to your unborn child. Also keep in mind that there is a chance that you will be losing a lot of blood when you give birth. Anaemia will have an alter effect of dizziness, fast heart rate and other complications that would prolong your stay at the hospital. Excellent sources of iron are clams, oysters, chicken liver, pork liver, beef, turkey and shrimps.

Vitamins A, C and E will not only benefit the insides of your body but would also give your appearance a healthy glow. Most fruits and vegetables contain these needed nutrients.

Part of a pregnant woman's healthy diet is avoiding foods or drinks such as raw meats and sea foods to avoid salmonella and listeria poisoning, alcohol, unpasteurized juices, milk and cheese. It also includes fishes having high mercury content like tilefish, king mackerel and swordfish. It is better to take precaution for a healthy pregnancy and for a healthy baby.
