Baby Making

Pregnancy Folklore

Written by babymaking.co.uk

Before science was honed to be the well-oiled machine that it is today, women back in the day have relied on ancient rituals and believed in old-fashioned superstitions so that they could get pregnant. No artificial insemination, BBT charting, or fertility tests for the women of the olden times - they put their faith, trust, and their baby-making abilities on the moon cycles, crop harvest seasons, fertility symbols, and even on weird animal behaviors.

Odd as these old beliefs may seem, some of these fertility traditions have amazingly worked for a great number of women time and time again. Some women who abide by these traditions have been so successful in producing healthy babies that many couples desperate to have their own baby continuously believe in these old customs up to this day. And this is even if those beliefs have absolutely no empirical proof or scientific basis whatsoever.

Think it's worth giving them a shot? Many couples say that it wouldn't hurt to try. Here are some of those beliefs, customs, traditions, and superstitions on how women can become pregnant.

-          Anything shaped like a horseshoe or the crescent moon is a good luck charm for fertility.

-          The rabbit's foot is not only a sign of good luck, but also a symbol of fertility. Keep a rabbit's foot with you if you want to become pregnant.

-          The woman must not touch a frog or else she will become infertile.

-          If a woman sees two storks, it means that she will become pregnant.

-          After sex, lie very still on your back on the bed.

-          String some hazelnut and hang it in the couple's room. They will soon have a baby together.

-          Certain sexual positions are much better for the couple who wants to conceive. They say that the best position is the man on top or the good old missionary position. Avoid sex positions wherein the woman is on top or straddling the man.

-          Like the Celtics believe, the woman should gather acorns at night to boost her fertility.

-          Women who have a tipped or tilted uterus should opt for making love from behind.

-          On June 23 which is Midsummer's Eve, the woman is to go into her garden naked and pick a St. John's Wort flower if she wants to become pregnant.

-          A woman planning to conceive should not knit an article of clothing or else it may stop her from having a baby.

-          After sex, the woman should stand on her head and she will have better chances of becoming pregnant.

-          Here's one that is still very popular. On the wedding day, the bride must take part in the cutting of the cake. She also must have the first bite. Otherwise, she will have trouble getting pregnant.

-          Throwing rice grains on the couple during their wedding day also ensures fertility.

-          Wearing fertility symbols such as pine cones, turtles, acorns, frogs, and eggs as bracelets, necklaces, and other jewelry will ensure pregnancy.
