Causes of Infertility in Women

Written by babymaking.co.uk

A complete family is made up of parents and children. However, not every woman has the capability to conceive easily and some women cannot conceive at all. Infertility is one of the greatest dilemmas a female has to face. It is best to consult your trusted OB in case you're having a hard time getting pregnant and one of these common reasons of infertility affects you. Thankfully, latest researches and modern technology makes it possible to treat infertility.

Age factor

Women, who are in their late 40's, sometimes as early as 35, have a lesser chance of having a baby. Since birth, female has an abundant supply of egg cells. However, this supply decreases rapidly along with fertility as age increases. The egg cells of an aging woman may also develop abnormalities in the chromosomes. If an egg cell contains an abnormal chromosome, it might result to miscarriage. Researchers noted that women, aging 37-45 is given only 50% chance of getting pregnant and the other 50% is the risk of miscarriage.

Lifestyle factors

Vices such as alcohol and cigarette smoking may decrease the chance for both men and women to be fertile. Both smoking and alcohol causes miscarriage, early menopause, cervical cancer and abnormalities to the baby in case the woman is already pregnant.

Weight also plays an important role in increasing the chance of having a baby. Under weight or over weight can trigger menstrual cycle disturbance therefore causing weakness in woman's ovulation.

Stress may influence infertility, as well. That is why most health care specialists advices women, who are planning to conceive, to take a break for at least six months prior to conception. When a woman is pressured (from work, family, environment or due to infertility itself), the hormonal relationship the brain, the pituitary and the ovary is disturbed. Because of this, she will experience neurochemical changes in her body, which will affect the hormones' regulation of the egg cells.

Ovulatory disorders

Anovulation is a hormonal state where the matured egg cell can't be released from the ovary.  Ovulatory disorder happens mostly to women experiencing suppressed period also known as amenorrhea or women having irregular period also called as oligomenorrhea

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)

Also known as Polycystic Ovary Disease or Stein-Leventhal Syndrome and has been identified as one of the main reasons why women are unable to conceive. Sometimes, amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea may lead to PCOS. Just like the two mentioned ovulatory disorder, PCOS happens when the matured egg cell is not released from ovary. However, in this case, PCOS is characterized by many small cysts in the ovary. The cysts are matured follicles that were not released due to abnormal level of the hormones.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

Sexually active women are prone to chlamydia and gonorrhea (two of the most common cause of PID's) which is a result of unprotected sex. When the bacteria from these vaginal infections were left untreated, it will work its way up to the infected female's uterus, fallopian tube and ovary. This will leave the reproductive tract to be scarred and the fallopian tubes blocked. The scarring makes it impossible for fertilization to happen.
